In the EU, approximately 40 per cent of the plastic used is spent on packaging alone. Therefore, the PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) aims to reduce waste and improve recycling across the EU. As a result, businesses must pay more attention to packaging design, labelling and documentation. As these new requirements can be especially challenging for small producers, retailers and start-ups, there has been some outrage concerning these rules.
Own-brand products mean more responsibility
Companies selling products under their own brand may be responsible for meeting PPWR requirements. These include:
- checking compliance,
- preparing technical documents,
- issuing an EU declaration of conformity,
- ensuring correct labelling and
- completing registrations.
Especially, for smaller businesses, these tasks can take up significant time and resources.
More requirements will follow in the coming years, including rules on labelling, recyclability and recycled materials. From 2030, empty space in e-commerce packaging must not exceed 50 per cent. Violations could lead to fines of up to 200,000 euros. Missing registrations or non-compliant packaging can also lead to sales bans.
