POP Regulation: Proposal to reduce pollutant limit values

The objective is to update the concentration limits set out in Annexes IV and V of the POPs Regulation for certain substances or substance groups. These limits determine how waste containing POPs should be treated and in particular whether it can be recycled or whether it should be destroyed or irreversibly transformed.

On 28 October 2021, a new proposal for the POPs Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 was adopted by the EU Commission. The Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation governs the management of chemicals that persist in the environment for long periods of time. They can accumulate in food chains and harm human health and the environment. The proposal aims to reinforce the implementation of the obligation to ensure the environmentally sound management of hazardous and other waste for these substances. The objective is to update the concentration limits set out in Annexes IV and V of the POPs Regulation for certain substances or substance groups. These limits determine how waste containing POPs should be treated and in particular whether it can be recycled or whether it should be destroyed or irreversibly transformed.
