A number of Chinese electronics have reportedly lost their CCC safety certificate (China Compulsory Certificate). Some products, including several power banks and lithium batteries, have already been recalled. The concern is that some producers may have replaced tested battery cells with cheaper alternatives after testing. This means the products sold may not match the samples originally approved.
Multiple incidents have prompted Chinese authorities to take action. These include various fires, one even caused by a power bank on an aircraft. So far, authorities have penalised 131 violations, with total fines of 17.36 million yuan.
What does this mean for importers?
Alas, a valid safety certificate does not always guarantee consistent product quality. European businesses importing power banks from China should, consequently, examine both the certificates and the actual components used in the products. This means checking where individual battery cells come from, verifying suppliers and keeping clear records of product compliance.
