RoHS: Some exemptions for lead expired on 21 July 2021

If you use aluminium, galvanized steel and lead-alloyed copper or lead in ceramic components of capacitors, we strongly recommend that you review your documentation, as your product may no longer be marketable.

The RohS Directive 2011/65/EU governs the restriction on the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. This includes substances such as lead, chromium and phthalates. In order to make it easier for manufacturers to substitute hazardous substances in their products, for instance, Annex III to the Directive defines various exemptions and transitional periods. An exception frequently used in practice concerns lead as an alloying element. In this context, important transition periods expired on 21 July 2021. Numerous electrical consumer products are affected by this.

Check your portfolio of electrical products to see if you are affected by the expiration of the transition periods. This will be the case particularly if you use lead as an alloying element in a mass proportion of more than 0.1% in a homogeneous component. If you use aluminium, galvanized steel and lead-alloyed copper or lead in ceramic components of capacitors, we strongly recommend that you review your documentation, as your product may no longer be marketable.

trade-e-bility will keep you up to date on the latest changes to the RoHS Directive for your electrical products and support you in the evaluation of test reports and other product documentation.
