Products containing mercury to be more strictly regulated in the EU

In particular, exports of mercury products and products such as dental amalgam and certain other mercury-added products such as light bulbs and measuring devices will be further restricted.

The EU Commission is pushing back on mercury trade and use in two initiatives. For one thing, Regulation (EU) No. 649/2012 on International Trade in Hazardous Chemicals is being revised. For another, a new initiative will further restrict trade in materials and products containing mercury. In particular, exports of mercury products and products such as dental amalgam and certain other mercury-added products such as light bulbs and measuring devices will be further restricted. Each of the initiatives is expected to be completed before the end of February and by the end of 2022.

Economic actors affected, such as importers or fulfilment service providers, should prepare for corresponding regulations in the medium term. trade-e-bility follows the EU initiatives, informs its customers of relevant changes and supports them in implementing the requirements.
