Furniture should last longer

Economic operators who will be affected by the new Ecodesign Framework Regulation should find out at an early stage how it will be implemented. It is not clear whether EN 17902 will be harmonised in this area. However, it provides an insight into what may come.

Products should have a longer life span. This is one of the objectives of the new draft Ecodesign Framework Regulation 2022/0095 (COD), as of March this year. Furniture is explicitly mentioned there as an objective of the regulation. The prEN 17902:2022 standard now provides advance action and construction aids for the design of furniture with regard to its assembly and disassembly. The standard also attempts to use a grading system to evaluate criteria such as personal effort, necessary tools and equipment, usable connections and fittings. The standard is still being voted on as a draft until 12 October 2022. Interested parties can still participate via the DIN portal until then.
