The EU Commission has launched a new project on food contact legislation. Regulation No. 1935/2004 is currently valid in this area. In Germany, this regulation is integrated into the Food, Commodities and Feed Code (LFGB). The aim of this project is to clarify whether it is still possible under the current regulation to meet requirements such as
- ensuring food safety and a high level of health protection,
- reducing the presence and use of hazardous chemicals,
- taking account of the latest scientific knowledge and techniques; and
- supporting innovation and sustainability by promoting safe reusable and recyclable solutions, thus contributing to reducing the environmental impact of the sector.
Alternatively, the EU Commission is also considering replacing Regulation No. 1935/2004 with completely new legislation.
Affected economic operators such as manufacturers and importers should keep up to date with the resulting changes in the requirements on food contact materials. Active participation in the evaluation can still be exercised here until 11 January 2023.
