According to Heise Online, the Freiburg-based Öko-Institut recommends stopping the exemption of cadmium-containing material layers in displays in the RoHS Directive. This would mean that such materials are likely to be prohibited in 2022.
Manufacturers and importers of displays are advised to obtain information today about alternative materials or displays with alternative materials which, according to the Öko-Institut, are already available on the market. In addition, it should be borne in mind that materials such as cadmium that fall under an RoHS exemption may still need to be reported as a SVHC (substance of very high concern) under REACh.
