The European Commission reports that it has decided to ban the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials. The decision is based on the scientific assessment of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In particular, it concluded that BPA may have potentially harmful effects on the immune system, the Commission said.
BPA is already banned in infant bottles and similar products in the EU. After a transitional period of 18 months, the ban now also applies to other packaging that comes into contact with food or beverages. This includes, for example, the coating of metal cans, consumer goods such as reusable plastic drinks bottles, coolers for water distribution and other kitchen items.
In exceptional cases where there is no risk to consumers and no safe alternatives are available, very limited derogations are possible. The ban also includes other bisphenols that are harmful to reproduction and the endocrine system.
