Battery Implementation Act (BattDG) in Germany

Your service provider for all obligations from the BattDG

The Battery Implementation Act (BattDG) translates the Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 into German law. It regulates the placing on the market, take-back and environmentally sound disposal of batteries and accumulators. Among other things, the BattDG stipulates binding collection targets and differentiated recycling efficiencies for waste batteries containing cadmium, lead and mercury, and obliges producers and importers operating on the German market to register as producers with the central register so that they can continue to place batteries and accumulators on the market.

By participating in a PRO / OfH (Producer Responsibility Organisation) for waste batteries, producers and importers fulfil their take-back and recycling obligations. This applies to all 5 battery categories:

  • Device batteries
  • Batteries for light vehicles (LV)
  • Starter batteries
  • Industrial batteries
  • EV batteries (electric vehicle batteries)

In addition, producers and importers are obliged to label batteries and accumulators with the symbol of a crossed-out wheelie bin and to report to the Producer Responsibility Organisations how many batteries or accumulators they sold in the previous month.
