As our partner IT Recht Kanzlei reports, regulations will come into force on 20 June 2025 in accordance with (EU) 2023/1669 (energy labelling) and (EU) 2023/1670 (ecodesign), requiring smartphones and tablets to be labelled with a new standardised EU energy label. Producers and sellers are obliged to provide information such as energy efficiency class, associated scale, energy label and a specific product data sheet online. For the first time, the new labels include not only energy consumption but also additional information on robustness (e.g. drop resistance), ease of repair and protection against water and foreign objects. The EU is thus expanding the familiar energy labelling to include important criteria for the sustainability and durability of mobile devices.
