From December 2024, non-profit repair cafés and self-help workshops will be able to apply for financial support to purchase new equipment and materials. The “Repairing instead of throwing away” funding programme will initially provide over 3 million euros to extend the lifespan of products and conserve resources. Each initiative can apply for up to 3,000 euros, whereby the funding initially applies to non-profit associations and will be extended to non-association initiatives from 2025. The "anstiftung" foundation manages the funds and will provide a digital application portal. The programme complements EU measures such as the Right to Repair.
The Federal Association of Retail Technology (BVT) criticises the federal government's "misguided repair funding" as unsafe, as amateur repairs to electrical and water-carrying appliances could endanger the health of users and calls instead for the promotion of professional repairs, for example through a repair bonus.
